Jan. 31—A little over a month after an explosion killed a night auditor at the Bird-in-Hand Family Inn in Leacock Township, a fire damaged the adjacent restaurant Tuesday night.
Emergency crews responded to a call for a 2-alarm fire at 10:49 p.m. Tuesday, per Lancaster County Wide Communications. Firefighters were seen standing on the roof, and the nearby Old Philadelphia Pike was shut down as crews fought the fire.
Benan Ozkan, who works at the front desk of the Bird-in-Hand Family Inn, said that the fire started around 10 p.m. She said she saw smoke coming out from the roof and that the fire may have started in the kitchen.
Crews cleared the scene by 2 a.m. CBS21 reports that the fire caused extensive damage. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
An operations manager for the restaurant stated that the restaurant would remain closed for the day.
An explosion that flattened the front office of the Bird-in-Hand Family Inn on Dec. 18 resulted in the death of Michele Miller, a 61-year-old Lancaster native who worked as a night auditor of Bird-in-Hand Family Corp for 34 years.
The restaurant adjacent to the inn had reopened during the last week of December. Fire marshals were still investigating the cause of the original fire, which was initially suspected to be caused by a propane explosion.
